Since joining the service in 1978, Simon has served at multiple wholetime stations, including Colchester Road, Bond Street, Princes Street, Ipswich East, and Eye Fire Station as an on-call firefighter.

Over the years, he has become a well-respected figure within the service, known for his skill, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the safety of his community.

Simon’s dedication has been recognised with numerous honours, including the Golden, Diamond, and Platinum Jubilee Medals, the King’s Coronation Medal, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, as well as two Long Service Clasps for 30 and 40 years of service.

Reflecting on Simon’s career, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer, Jon Lacey, said:

"Simon’s contribution to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has been nothing short of outstanding. His dedication, resilience, and professionalism have set a high standard for those who have had the privilege to serve alongside him.

“Beyond his expertise as a firefighter, Simon’s camaraderie, mentorship, and sense of humour have made a lasting impact on his colleagues. We thank him for his incredible service and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.

Councillor Steve Wiles, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said:

“My congratulations and well-wishes go out to Simon on his retirement. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for his decades of service and wish him a retirement filled with happiness, relaxation, and new adventures.”

As Simon steps into retirement, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, friendship, and service. Fortunately, his firefighting days aren’t entirely over, as he will continue as an on-call firefighter, meaning his experience and wisdom remains a part of the service.

Simon Dearing, said:

“"Find a job you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life”… this quote accurately sums up my fire service career as 604! With the support of family, friends and colleagues I have come through the 46 plus years relatively unscathed.

“The most important lesson I have learnt in that time is that everyone is different and a bit of support and a few kind words can make all the difference.”
