Woodbridge residents encouraged to have their say on walking and wheeling improvements

Woodbridge residents are being asked to give their feedback on proposed walking and wheeling improvements in the town centre.
Published: 15 Nov 2024

The proposed scheme forms part of almost £8 million funding awarded to Suffolk County Council by Active Travel England and has been developed to give residents more choice in how they travel for local, shorter journeys.

This follows a consultation which took place earlier in the year which focused on the Old Barrack Road, Burkitt Road and Peterhouse Crescent areas. Over 2,200 responses were received, and the council are working on the detailed designs for these areas.

The town centre consultation has launched today and will run until 10 January 2025. It will cover the following areas:

Quay Street - Build a raised table across Station Road and the junction of Quay Street to slow traffic down and widen the pavement on both sides of Quay Street to improve accessibility. In order to do this, Quay Street will become one-way northbound.

The Thoroughfare - Improve the signage at the entrance to highlight traffic restrictions as well as public realm improvements to create a more accessible, user-friendly space for everyone which could include benches, planting and secure bicycle stands and lockers.

Market Hill area - To improve pedestrian accessibility and safety, we have two options for consideration on Market Hill Road, either one-way towards Theatre Street or access only. Either proposed change would reduce the number of vehicles using this area and allow for wider pavements. There will also be a review of on-street parking to consider provision of blue badge parking bays and create crossing points around Market Hill area to improve safety for people crossing the road.

Councillor Alexander Nicoll, Suffolk County Council’s deputy cabinet member for transport strategy, said:

“Suffolk County Council has been very successful in winning funding from central government to improve active travel infrastructure across Suffolk, and by engaging with residents it allows us to fully understand their needs and concerns prior to implementing these improvements.

“Ultimately, we want to be able to provide more sustainable travel options for our residents to make walking, wheeling, and cycling trips easier, safer, and more convenient.

“I am glad to share this consultation with residents in Woodbridge and I encourage them to take a look at the proposals and let us have their views."

There will also be two drop-in events held, these will take place on:

  • Saturday 30 November, 9.30am – 12.30pm at the Community Centre, Station Road, IP12 4AU
  • Thursday 5 December, 10am – 12.30pm in St Mary’s Church Hall, Market Hill, IP12 4LP
