Electric vehicle charging channel pilot project

Suffolk County Council is looking for a small number of Suffolk residents to participate in a 12-month trial to test an EV charging channel product.

What is an EV charging channel?

It is a cable channel cut into the pavement to allow an EV's charging cable to run from the home to the public highway.

What will happen?

A charging channel will be installed into the pavement outside your property. This channel will allow an electric vehicle charging cable to be carried from your home charger to your parked car. It reduces the risk of hazards to other users on the footway.

We will be testing three different charging channels:

The aim of the trial is to see which option would be best suited for future use.

Requirements to take part in the trial

  • You must have a battery electric vehicle or planning on purchasing one imminently
  • You must have no access to off-street parking, and park on the road
  • No dropped kerb outside your property
  • No grass verges in the paving outside your property
  • No metal-cased street furniture outside your property, e.g. lampposts
  • You are willing to install a home charger at your own cost.

What Suffolk County Council will do

  • Organise the installation of your charging channel with the supplier
  • Fund the cost of the charging channel, the Section 178 licence during the trial and planning permission costs for a home charger.

What you have to do

  • Apply for planning permission from your local District or Borough Council for a home charger (this is usually required for properties with on-street parking only)
  • Have a fully electric car to charge once the charging channel is installed
  • Fund the cost and installation of a home charger. We will support you with applying for the government grant scheme to receive up to £350.00 towards cost of installation
  • Give feedback when requested throughout the trial period.
