Guidance for importing ladders

Ladders must meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Ladders should be manufactured to comply with product standard BS EN 131 and meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

There are a number of labelling requirements for ladders, including the name and address of the manufacturer / importer, the type of ladder and possible use, the weight of the ladder and maximum total load, batch, model or serial number, and warnings and instructions.

As an importer of ladders, you have a legal duty to ensure that the products you supply are safe. Guidance is available below to help you make sure the ladders you import are labelled correctly, are accompanied with the correct warnings and instructions, as well as making certain the manufacturer has carried out relevant procedures to ensure the ladders are safe.

If you are an importer based in England, you can contact Trading Standards for further advice via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
