Nautilus project could bring more harm to Suffolk

A consultation has just been announced (15 July 2024) by the energy regulator Ofgem for the Nautilus interconnector.

The overall project would involve a new subsea cable allowing electricity to flow between the UK and Belgium. The plans would see the project make landfall between Sizewell and Thorpeness, with cables running to Friston, where the interconnector would be sited, connecting to the Grid at an as-yet unbuilt substation.

It had been hoped that an alternative site on the Isle of Grain, in Kent, would be considered suitable. However, that location was rejected by Ofgem. Therefore, this consultation outlines a proposal to connect the project to the UK, in Suffolk.

Councillor Richard Rout, Suffolk County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, said:

“Suffolk is yet again bracing itself for the impact of another large energy project. It feels like the same old story, with cost-savings prioritised over the harmful effects on our communities and environment.

“The council has always supported the need for the country to ensure energy security.

“But we’re now seeing layer upon layer of uncoordinated energy projects impacting Suffolk, irreversibly damaging communities, their heritage and environment. It’s relentless and it is unfair.”

The council will carefully consider the regulator’s Nautilus consultation, and its impacts, particularly in light of the Sea Link project, which is currently under consultation by National Grid.

Councillor Rout continues:

“If Nautilus comes to Suffolk, the Sea Link project, around which we also have significant concerns, must be reshaped to coordinate with it.”

“The new Secretary of State has said he is committed to decarbonising the electricity system by 2030. But that goal must include serious consideration for the communities who will live with the new infrastructure.”

“We also have real concerns about the impact of on the mental wellbeing of those who must face the prospect of new infrastructure. Project promoters must recognise their duty of care, because the welfare of our communities is at stake.”

Ofgem has announced that it is consulting on the possibility of Nautilus connecting at Friston as part of its Initial Project Assessment of Nautilus. Local residents and businesses are encouraged to have their say, with the consultation closing on 15 August 2024.
