Sizewell C nuclear power plant

Details of proposals for Sizewell C, the consented new nuclear power plant in Suffolk.

The Sizewell C application was granted development consent on 20 July 2022, by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. SZC Co. plan for commencement and start of construction of the scheme to be in 2024, with pre-commencement works already underway.

The Council has key roles in discharging requirements, monitoring and managing the monetary mitigation contributions by SZC Co secured through a Deed of Obligation and held by the Council. Where Suffolk County Council discharges requirements, this will be published on the County Council’s Planning Register.

During the consultations and examination, Suffolk County Council has been a statutory consultee and has evaluated, challenged, and commented upon the proposals to get the best possible outcomes for the people of Suffolk.

To support its work on Sizewell C, Suffolk County Council is also currently the Chair of the New Nuclear Local Authorities Group, the UK’s principal local authority forum for debate and the sharing of knowledge, experience and best practice on new nuclear developments. The group has published independent research on impacts of nuclear projects based on Hinkley Point C experience. Our New Nuclear local authorities group page has more information.

This page provides details of key documents related to the consent and related to the examination, as well as an overview of the history of the proposals.

Further details of the proposals are available on SZC Co.’s Sizewell C pages and on the Planning Inspectorate Sizewell C website. East Suffolk Council’s website provides further detail focussed on the District Council’s responsibilities in the project.
