Safety fences and barriers separate roads and routes from hazards.

Report a problem

We use barriers and fences to protect all route users, for instance:

  • pedestrians - using railings between the pavement and roads
  • motor vehicles - using crash barriers and central reservations

Our maintenance standards for fences and barriers are set out in the table below

Safety fences

Damaged safety fences will be made safe within 24 hours and permanently repaired within 4 weeks

Pedestrian barriers

Damaged barriers will be made safe within 24 hours and permanently repaired within 4 weeks

Other fences

Fences are normally owned by the property owner. We will request they make the fence safe.

We will make a fence safe within 24 hours if the owner cannot be contacted or refuses to do so.

Any fence which is our responsibility will be made safe within 24 hours if it presents a danger to highway users

Walls over 1.5 metres

If walls are dangerous they will be dealt with by the district or borough council
